The Labrador Retriever, also shortened to Labrador, is a large, long-haired breed of dog originally developed in the United Kingdom from imported British hunting dogs. Today the Labrador Retriever is popular worldwide in many countries, especially in the Western hemisphere. It is said that in British English, the Labrador is called the "labrador dog" or "labrador terrier." But no matter what the name, the Labrador Retriever is known for its affectionate and lovable nature, its intelligence and a keen sense of smell, its powerful hearing and sight, and even its ability to be hand-held! (This is actually a common misconception - Labradors were actually used as hunting aids in centuries past.)
There are many distinctive characteristics of the modern Labrador Retriever breed, some of which are very noticeable from the outside. One of these is the long coat. The Labrador has long hair, which is brushed or clipped on the opposite side to help keep it from tangling up. Another noticeable trait of the Labrador Retriever is its alertness to potential dangers and its need to "go in face-to-face" with potential threats. The breed is extremely intelligent and eager to please and has been bred down from the older draft dogs used for foxhunting.

When it comes to the skin, the American Kennel Club classifies the Labrador Retriever as "fair-skinned". The most common colors for Labrador Retrievers are dark chocolate or black and tan. Some Labrador is also born with a silver or black coat, though this rarely occurs. The black coat is thought to be the result of an inherited gene and is more common in female Labradors than males. Even though the coat may appear solid at first glance, many labs have an inner pale yellow color that turns into a black leather-like finish during the shedding process.
Some people may find it hard to believe that a dog with such a delicate undercoat would make an excellent pet, but the coats of Labs are actually quite sturdy. They have several protective oils that protect the body from heat and cold. The protective oils also repel insects and other unwelcome guests, as well as other dangers such as dogs with allergies. Due to their naturally protective nature, labs are often used by families with children, as they are very calm and easy to teach.
A Labrador Retriever's most distinguishing feature is its distinctive long and powerful rudder. The name "labrador" is derived from the word "labrador" which means "water-bearer". Originally, the breed was developed as a cross between an English water-bearer and a spotted breed of hunting dog. Although the pronunciation of "labrador" is closer to "ladder" than "rudder", the former pronunciation is still considered more common in the Labrador Retriever breed.

They make great companions for children and adults and are known to be very affectionate and loving.
